Egypt's Most Loved Street Dish

Kushary is Cairo's legendary street food: a satisfying bowl of rice, lentils, pasta, and chickpeas — crowned with caramelised onions, a bold tomato sauce, and tangy garlic/lemon/vinegar.

Fast, filling, and entirely plant-based. It's been feeding millions for over a century. Now it's coming to Wageningen.

Official UNESCO Recognition  ·  December 2025

Kushary Is Now World Heritage

In December 2025, UNESCO inscribed Kushary on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — making it the first Egyptian dish ever to receive this distinction.

"Koshary is enjoyed by people of all ages, genders and backgrounds across rural, urban and coastal communities. It is shared with neighbours and friends, served at family gatherings, and offered at national events."
